My only complaint about this book is the fact that its examples need to be revised, or they won't work with an ANSI strict compiler, such as codewarrior (although I wouldn't reccomend an ANSI strict compiler for any beginner). For example, all if the main functions in this book have a void return type, which can cause errors, where in codewarrior you need to return an int '0' to flag the end of your program. Also, You'll need to include the "using namespace std" directive in ANSI strict.T [...]

Beginners using the linux operating system and compiling with gcc will not have a problem with the examples in this book. I like the fact that the author even explains how to compile programs under linux, which helped me out a lot, being a beginner myself.

The textbook itself gets five starts. It does a great job of teaching a beginner programmer. Some of the chapters do seem to reiterate some topics more times than necessary, but perhaps that's the author choosing to err on the side of caution to make sure certain teaching points stick.Taking online courses for my degree, I read this book pretty much from cover to cover. The book teaches to the beginner without being condescending. It is very well written with a lot of good examples, charts, [...]

This is an excellent book if you are new to C++ or even if you have some prior programming experience. It covers numerous topics and a lot of the information can be generalized to other programming languages as well.My one major complaint is that the author/publisher have only made the appendices and extra materials available for 6 months with a special online code, only one of which comes with the book. If you need a new code, you have to spend upwards of $20 for it. In case you purchase a u [...]

This is in reference to the 9th edition. The content of the chapters is clear enough to understand and use for learning, but as it is a textbook for the course I'm taking, the assignments are from the book. This wasn't an issue until chapter 5 where the Programming Challenges expect that you will go to the Companion website and download the source code. The catch is that there is no source code on the companion site, thus making it impossible to complete the assignments as written. The preface st [...]

This is a very well written book. It is easy to understand and the examples are great. I ordered the electronic version which did not contain a cd or access code. (the cd is just visual studio which you can download for free). The access code can be purchase for 20 something dollars on pearson website, so I would save your money and get a used copy or electronic version instead of dishing out more money for a new book.

To preface my comments with a bit of information about my perspective/experience when reviewing this book: Last semester I took Introduction to Computer Science and Logic. This semester I'm taking Fundamentals of Computer Programming (Level I), and this was our chosen textbook (currently I'm 5 chapters in out of 20 total, although we will only be covering up to Ch. 11 this semester, and the next course level up, covers Chapters 12-20). In the larger scheme of things, I'm a newbie to the subject, [...]
